The Flying Fifteen Open is a 2-day event held at the beginning of October. It often incorporates other championships, such as the Inland or Scottish Championship or Travellers’ Trophy. The club has a thriving Flying Fifteen class whose crews look forward to the opportunity for further competition against visiting sailors and to welcoming them to the fine sailing waters of one of the largest freshwater areas in the country. Our record of 46 entries for a World’s Qualifier in 2014 was one of the biggest fleets in the UK that year!
Our club Keelboat Weekend is held at the same time and visitors are always very welcome. Participants include a variety of keelboats with GK24s, Sonatas, K1s and Hawk 20s being present in greatest numbers, though a Farr 30 and a catamaran have also participated. The club keelboats race regularly during the season and Keelboat Weekend is the culmination of their season and we have previously added class starts for VX Ones and SB20s.
There are three trophies (for club member) to be won over the weekend:
- Stanford Challenge Cup for the overall keelboat fleet winner
- John Orr Trophy for the Achilles fleet winner
- Ballantyne Trophy for the best placed club Flying Fifteen
